If you go directly into the pot with your brush, you may bring bacteria into it. As a result, the leftover paint has a shorter shelf life because there is a risk of mold formation. With a paint tray you pour out what you need and close the jar again.
Paint tray liners are useful if you want to use the work tray more often, for example when you use multiple colors of paint. You do not have to buy multiple paint trays, but only extra inner trays. This saves a lot of cleaning work.
